Meaning of 'lu'

lu. [Tel.] n. The sing of the plural in Telugu. It is probably a corruption of the Sanskrit word guru. In the Ujjayani or Middle Indian dialect, as seen, according to Cunningham, in the Girnar, Rupenath and other inscriptions of Asoka, the word guru (guru) first occurs in the form of gulu (gulu). Cf. gal used in Tamil and galu in Kanarese. kulalu as a plural ending occurs in a few words in Telugu, as kolakulu. Vide Seshagiri Sastri's Notes on Telugu Grammar. Originally there was no sign of the plural in the Dravidian tongues. See Caldwell. The use of lu as a plural sign was finally extended to other than Masculine nouns, as tammulu, strilu, cetlu, &c.

The use of లు as a plural sign was finally extended to other than Masculine nouns, as తమ్ములు, స్త్రీలు, చెట్లు, &c.
